PUTRA CANSELOR FERTIGROW

KOLEJ CANSELOR – The College Representative Council from the Green Sustainability and Food Security Secretariat, Kolej Canselor, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), launched the Canselor Fertigrow Program on November 23, 2024. This initiative aims to introduce students to the fertigation system, a modern agricultural method that does not require soil but uses advanced technology in planting. The program, conducted in collaboration with the Faculty of Agriculture, was held at the area between Block Keranji and Block Delima in Kolej Canselor. It provided students with the opportunity to explore the concept of sustainable agriculture and the use of nutrient solutions in crop cultivation. The program also involved a gotong-royong (community work) activity and the installation of the fertigation system, which engaged 75 participants, including the Kolej Canselor community and co-curricular students (debate club).

As part of this program, a knowledge-sharing workshop was also held on November 24, 2024 at the Kolej Canselor Hall, conducted practically to provide students with a deeper understanding of the fertigation system. The workshop included interactive learning sessions that covered both theoretical and practical aspects of managing the fertigation system, soil-less planting techniques, and important factors such as the selection and use of suitable nutrient solutions. Participants were given the chance to try these techniques themselves at the garden, where they learned how to grow various types of plants using modern, efficient, and environmentally-friendly technology.

This program aims to foster students’ knowledge of sustainable agriculture and equip them with skills in agrotechnology, which is increasingly developing worldwide. Additionally, it supports the agenda of green sustainability, agribusiness, and agrotechnology, which are core elements of Teras A in agricultural sustainability and Teras H in campus life, particularly the H3 environmental element.

With guidance from experts at the Faculty of Agriculture, participants were able to gain valuable practical experience to enhance their understanding of modern agriculture. The program is also expected to spark students' interest in becoming involved in the fields of agribusiness and agriculture technology, which are becoming increasingly relevant on a global scale. The workshop provided them with an advantage in mastering the latest techniques that will help them compete in the rapidly evolving agricultural industry.

Overall, the Canselor Fertigrow Program and the related fertigation workshop not only benefited students in the development of practical skills but also broadened their understanding of sustainability and agricultural technology. The program is hoped to inspire awareness and a deep interest in modern agriculture that is green, sustainable, and competitive.
